Terms of use
Effective October 8, 2026.
Not legal advice
The Citation Code teaches how to identify, build, locate, and check legal citations. It is educational material, not legal advice, and reading it creates no attorney–client relationship. A formatted citation does not establish that a source supports a proposition or remains valid law. Court rules, local rules, standing orders, and the instructions of a receiving publication or instructor control over any general convention described here.
Fictional material
Sources labeled “Fictional training example — not legal authority” are invented for practice. They must not be cited or relied on in any real matter.
Rights
Original text, exercises, explanations, selection and arrangement are © Matthew D. Giron. Conventions and selected reference information adapted from The Indigo Book are in the public domain under CC0; no exclusive rights are claimed in that material. Third-party sources linked or quoted remain the property of their respective holders.
You may read the online edition, link to any page, quote brief passages with attribution, and use the exercises for personal study or classroom instruction. You may not reproduce the book in bulk, redistribute it, or present it as your own work. Automated bulk copying of the text is not permitted; the site publishes a machine-readable summary at /llms.txt for discovery purposes.
Independence
The Citation Code is an independent publication by Matthew D. Giron. It is not sponsored, endorsed, or approved by The Bluebook's publishers, The Indigo Book's editors, Public.Resource.Org, any court, or any educational institution.
Availability and changes
The online edition is provided as is, without warranty. The author may revise the text, correct errors, and change or discontinue features. Edition and content-snapshot information appears on the dashboard.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules.
